Quincy
John Quincy Adams, the sixth president and the son of the second, was named for his maternal grandfather, Col. John Quincy, himself the namesake of the Massachusetts city near Boston. One of just a few usable Q names, Quincy became coolified by multifaceted music legend Quincy Jones.
Harrison
There have been two related presidents surnamed Harrison -- William Henry and Benjamin -- with #23 Benjamin being the grandson of #9 William. The name has two elements going for it -- the resurgence of Harry, thanks to the Prince and the Potter, and the increased interest in patronymics, like Jackson and Anderson.
Knox
James Knox Polk was the eleventh to hold the top office, and was given the name of his maternal grandfather, James Knox. Like most of the names used by the Jolie-Pitts, Knox, twin of Vivienne, has been influential. He was born in 2008, the name entered the list the following year, and by 2011 had jumped 269 places to Number 434.
Lincoln
The name Lincoln has been everywhere in recent months, including on an increasing number of birth certificates. The most presidential of all the presidents? names, Lincoln projects all the positive, admirable qualities of Honest Abe. Lincoln is now at its highest popularity ever, ranking at Number 178.
Ulysses
18th president Grant was christened Hiram Ulysses, but was never too comfortable with the initials HUG. Ulysses is a name with considerable gravitas, thanks to the Homeric hero and the James Joyce novel. One former SNLer, Ana Gasteyer, made this bold choice for her son in 2008.
Abram
Abraham, like Lincoln, been very much in view lately, but the original form Abram is also presidential, via the 20th Chief Exec, James Abram Garfield, whose term lasted only 200 days, until he was assassinated. The name Abram is on the rise, moving up almost one hundred places last year, partly because of the appeal of nickname Bram.
Chester
Vice President Chester Alan Arthur succeeded Garfield in the presidency. He was named Chester after the doctor and family friend who helped deliver him. Once a Top 100 name, Chester dropped off the list completely in 1995, but we think it has a nice vintagey feel that makes it worth considering. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson used it for their son.
Grover
The only president to serve two non-consecutive terms, Stephen Grover Cleveland is another one who went by his middle name. Grover left the popularity list five years after the debut of Sesame Street, which is probably no coincidence, but we think it has the same slightly eccentric charm as Chester and Calvin, and could make a comeback.
Theodore
Theodore Roosevelt?s name was wildly popular during his term of office, as was his nickname Teddy. Baby namers of today are in the process of making it among the top revived classics, but this time more likely to get to the short form Theo.
Calvin
Calvin was actually President Coolidge?s middle name (his first was John), but he was frequently known by such sobriquets as Cool Cal, Silent Cal and Cautious Cal. The slightly quirky Calvin now ranks at Number 209, as namers warm to friendly old short forms like Cal and Hal.
Truman
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a hard act to follow, but Harry S. Truman?s historic reputation is being upgraded all the time -- and both his names are currently cool. When the 33rd president was born in 1884, Truman ranked Number 502, when he took office in 1945, it had jumped to 249, and it?s once again back in play -- a name that radiates integrity and moral truth.
Walker
George Bushes 41 and 43 share the middle name of Walker, which was the maiden name of George Sr?s mother, Dorothy. Its Waspy surname aura is combined with creative connections to such cultural heroes as photographer Walker Evans and writer Walker Percy. Alternative choice: Ryder.
