Maggie Gyllenhaal: The Proud Lefty Says Teachers Union Has ?Huge Problems?

The actress was unapologetic this week as she promoted the movie, telling interviewers that classifying ?Won?t Back Down? as an unequivocally anti-union movie is an ?oversimplified? way of viewing the issue.

?Clearly -- and I don't know anyone who?d disagree -- there are huge problems with the teachers union,? she told the Philadelphia Daily News on Friday. ?So you can be in support of a teachers union and unions in general, but if you don't take the time to look at things that are broken ... then it will fall apart completely.? ?

In the interview, Gyllenhaal said she comes from a family of proud leftists, and that she herself is staunchly pro-union. However, she also suggested that the quickness with which critics have come out to blast ?Won?t Back Down? as a crack against the labor movement shows intolerance among the pro-union camp. ?Can we not even take a look at ways that the teachers union isn't functioning without being called anti-union?? she said. ?

Earlier this week, Gyllenhaal gave a similar explanation when she appeared on NBC?s ?Today? show, saying that she supports unions fundamentally but ?finds some faults? with them. ?

In ?Won?t Back Down,? Gyllenhaal?s character invokes the so-called parent-trigger law -- a real-life statute first passed in California, which allows parents and teachers to reclaim a failing school. The character?s attempts to reclaim her daughter?s Pittsburgh school are hindered by a bullying union representative played by Holly Hunter.

Last month, Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers, issued a public letter criticizing ?Won?t Back Down? as a ?false and misleading depiction of teachers and unions.?

Union supporters protested screenings of the movie in New York and Los Angeles. And Michael Mulgrew, president of New York City?s United Federation of Teachers, told the New York Times that the movie -- which is inspired by an actual incident in which a California parent invoked the parent-trigger law -- is a ?work of fiction.? He told the paper that, in real life, previous attempts by parents to reclaim schools have failed.

?Won?t Back Down? was financed by Phil Anschutz,

Terry Murray discusses role as Flyers? minor league coach

Terry Murray has been a fixture of the Philadelphia Flyers organization. Now he?ll help mold players preparing to join the big team.

He discussed his role as the head coach of the team?s AHL affiliate ? the Adirondack Phantoms ? with CSNPhilly.com. (Murray accepted the job in June.)

Tim Panaccio points out all the times Murray has worked for the Flyers:

Three times, Terry Murray played for the Flyers. Then he coached them to the 1997 Stanley Cup Final. He later scouted for them.
?
More recently, he was an assistant coach under Ken Hitchcock, and then John Stevens.

(One might also joke that he coached ?Flyers West? ? aka the Los Angeles Kings ? before being fired last season.)

Murray said it won?t take him much for him to get re-acclimated with the organization itself, although he?ll need some time to put ?faces to the names.?

With the lockout in full swing, Murray said he?ll turn to guys like Brayden Schenn and Sean Courturier to help lead the team.

?The drills will be the ones I used over the years,? Murray said. ?Brayden will remember and be familiar with them. These are smart hockey players.?

? ? And they do it right the first time. Yeah, I will look to him and to [Sean] Couturier and players who are the smart and good players to set the example every day.?

At least until ? or if ? the NHL games start again, that is.

London Rd2: Leko beats Ivanchuk, Nakamura bounces right back

London Rd2: Leko beats Ivanchuk, Nakamura bounces right back
22.09.2012 ? The games for the most part continue to be very exciting. Leko shows Hungarian precision and positional mastery, while Nakamura punishes his opponent with sheer willpower and tenacity. Gelfand and Giri were easily neutralized by Topalov and Wang Hao respectively, and although Dominguez also drew against Grischuk it was not exactly easy. Annotated report by GM Alejandro Ramirez.

The First FIDE Grand Prix is taking place from September 21 to October 3rd in Simpson?s-in-the-Strand, London. The games start at 14:00h local time (= 15:00h CEST, 17:00h Moscow, 09:00 a.m. New York). The tournament has a prize fund of 240,000 Euros.

Round two report

The games for the most part continue to be very exciting.? Leko shows Hungarian precision and positional mastery, while Nakamura punishes his opponent with sheer willpower and tenacity.? Gelfand and Giri were easily neutralized by Topalov and Wang Hao respectively, and although Dominguez also drew against Grischuk it would be a stretch to say that he did it easily.

Nakamura Hikaru 2783

Hikaru Nakamura: "You win, you lose. Life."

Kasimdzhanov - Nakamura: In a strange Kings Indian, the game was probably level all the way throughout. Eventually, in time pressure, Kasimdzhanov made a mistake that allowed the American to seize the initiative in what otherwise seemed a mindless endgame. With his king on the ropes and playing on the few seconds he had left, Kasim blundered checkmate in two.? You just can?t get in time pressure against Hikaru.? Nakamura wins.

Gelfand - Topalov: Nothing to see here.? Draw

Another example of Leko's mastery

Leko - Ivanchuk: After Ivanchuk seemingly transposes into an equal endgame, he commits a series of imprecisions that allow Leko to put on pressure.? A blunder soon follows, the Hungarian pounces, and it is all over. The French defense suffers another defeat.? Leko wins.

Giri - Wang Hao: Not as dull as the Gelfand game, but it comes close.? Draw.

So far the Cuban player has done very well

Grischuk - Dominguez: Grischuk sacrifices a pawn early on to put on a lot of pressure on Dominguez? queenside, which is also underdeveloped.? The Cuban is suffering the entire game but manages to wiggle out into an uncomfortable endgame, where Grischuk?s passed d-pawn is causing him a lot of headaches.? Unfortunately by this point, that is his one and only trump card, and once it has been blockaded there is little left. He eventually transposes into a pawn up rook endgame, but the material is too simplified. Dominguez hols on to his life and draw.

Adams - Mamedyarov

Investing in Early Childhood ? An ?Irresistible? Opportunity | UN ...

At the Clinton Global Initiative, it?s all about bringing together the movers and shakers from all sectors of society ? government, business, NGO and international organizations. A panel with the lofty title of ?The Early Years: An Irresistible Investment Opportunity? brought together a select group of individuals to speak about the importance of dedicating resources to supporting early childhood development: Geeta Rao Gupta, Deputy Executive Director, Unicef;? Joyce Banda, President of the Republic of Malawi; Bill Goodwyn, Chief Executive Officer, Discovery Education, Discovery Communications Inc.; Carolyn S. Miles, President and CEO, Save the Children; and Jay Naidoo, Chairman, The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN).

Throughout the conversation, Jay Naidoo stole the show with his enthusiastic, powerful remarks. Naidoo spoke about the need to stop viewing ?the poor as victims, when they often support entire families on $1 or 2 a day.? While this may seem like an obvious thing to say for people thinking about or working in the development sector, in practice, the poor are rarely seen as agents of their own destiny. Panelists spoke about how investing in the ?first 1000 days? of a child?s life is absolutely critical; how it sets the stage for a productive and healthy adulthood. One of the messages repeated throughout the discussion ? which reminded me a lot of discussions from the 2010 Women Deliver conference ? is that investing in early childhood is not just the right thing to do, it?s the smart thing to do. It?s good economics! It helps improve GDP and economic outcomes! It?s an investment in the future! While all these statements are true, it is a difficult point to make to the business people who form the majority of the CGI audience, for who returns on investment preferably translate into actual dollars, not GDP percentage points a few decades down the line.

Carolyn Miles and Jay Naidoo both highlighted the fact that we mostly know how to decrease child mortality and morbidity ? improving nutrition in the early years, community health and hygiene education, getting mothers involved, straightforward interventions like the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of an infant?s like. We?ve even developed some innovations that seem to work ? Naidoo spoke of sachets of nutrients available in Bangladesh that provide one month?s worth of nutrients for $1, a worthwhile investment for mothers and parents. All that said though, the real crux of the issue ? and, the topic of the panel ? was to make the case for investment in these solutions.

Towards the end of the discussion, the panelists attempted to make the case for why investing in the early years is an ?irresistible? investment. Why is that we should help children under 5 not ?just survive, but thrive?, as Geeta Rao Gupta put it in her introductory remarks? Is it, as Joyce Banda expressed, because ?a child is a special gift?? Is it about social stability, as suggested by Bill Goodwyn? Is it that investing in the education of young people that can develop to their full potential will make a firm ?more competitive as a company, a community, a country? as Jay Naidoo said? These are all true, though they merely begin to cover the reasons for which we need not just investment in the early years, but improved and accelerated action. The case for why investing in early childhood is ?irresistible? is reinforced every time a child under 5 dies of a preventable cause. We are all ? as a global community ? accountable for the way in which we treat our most vulnerable.

Decorative webs attract dinner

Orb-weaver spiders attract insects to their webs with ultraviolet (UV) decorations, a study has found.

The function of the intricate patterns in the webs of orb-weaver spiders is subject to much debate in the scientific community.

Previous explanations have identified them as bird scarers, mating signs, sun shades and camouflage.

Researchers now suggest the UV light-reflecting patterns could trick flying insects into landing on them.

Scientists from the University of Incheon, South Korea, undertook the study published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

They studied wasp spiders (Argiope bruennichi), a species common throughout Europe, north Africa and parts of Asia, which are named for the females' familiar striped abdomens.

During construction of the webs, the spiders are known to sporadically add zigzag patterns leading out from the centre. These patterns are created with special white silk known to reflect much more UV light than other strands in the web.

The scientists questioned why the animals would produce a stealthy ambush in the form of a non-reflective web only to decorate it with an eye-catching design.

To test the effects of the decoration, known as "stabilimentum", researchers compared decorated webs to webs without the patterns.

Associate Professor Kim Kil-Won and his team looked at the type of insects caught in each type of web, which revealed a possible clue to the purpose of stabilimenta.

They found a link between the decorations and increased foraging success for the spiders.

"The effects of stabilimenta on foraging success appear to be due to increased interception of UV-sensitive insect pollinators," said Prof Kim.

The team found that webs with the decorations caught twice as many large prey insects than unadorned webs.

Prof Kim explained that pollinators, such as the 20 families of flies, wasps, beetles and butterflies discovered in the decorated webs, have greater visual sensitivity to UV light.

Previous studies have shown how these pollinating insects are attracted to flowers with high UV-reflectance and Prof Kim suggested that the highly reflective web patterns capitalise on this attraction.

"We think that [by] decorating the web with a stabilimentum the spiders use a pre-existing bias in a prey animal toward UV-reflective surfaces," said Prof Kim.

However, the biologist added that his results did not invalidate earlier studies.

"Probably stabilimentum mechanically stabilise and strengthen the orb web," he said, "This property would help to maintain struggling large prey on the web."

He suggested that the adaptation could be used in different ways by different species of orb-weaver spider but further study is required to understand its original function.

"The evolutionary origin of the trait may have to be separated from its contemporary role," Prof Kim told BBC Nature.

Ed secretary is neutral in Chicago teachers strike

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Education Secretary Arne Duncan isn't taking sides in the Chicago teachers' strike that is keeping more than 350,000 students out of the classroom.

Duncan says he hopes the union and school board will come together quickly to get kids back in school.

Duncan is also the former chief of Chicago's public school system. He says he's confident both sides are working in the best interests of students.

Duncan says as teachers and school districts have done in elsewhere in the country, they should collaborate at the bargaining table to find a solution that puts kids first.

A spokesman for President Barack Obama said he hasn't taken sides in the dispute. Obama's opponent, Mitt Romney, said teachers were turning their backs on students and that Obama was siding with the strikers.

Romney: Obama gives no confidence of creating jobs

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney claimed Friday that President Barack Obama has failed to fulfill his promises in part because he does not understand what it takes to ignite a more robust economic recovery.

Resuming campaigning after a hiatus during the Democratic National Convention, Romney impugned Obama's competence, not his effort, the day after Obama accepted his party's nomination for president.

"This president tried, but he didn't understand what it takes to make our economy work. I do," Romney told 4,000 supporters at Northwest College in Orange City, the heart of Iowa's GOP-heavy west.

Entering the fall stretch to the Nov. 6 election, Romney is concentrating on Obama's performance, according to aides, to counter what they say are negative depictions of the Republican in Obama campaign ads.

It's also a way to keep the pressure on Obama, without assailing him personally. Although Obama is in a tight battle for re-election, a slight majority of Americans have a favorable opinion of him personally.

In an Associated Press-GfK poll last month, 52 percent of registered voters said they had a favorable opinion of the president, while 46 percent had an unfavorable opinion.

But on the question of who they trusted to do a better job handling the economy, Romney came out on top, 48 percent to Obama's 44 percent. A Washington Post/ABC News poll taken last month showed 56 percent of voters disapproved of Obama's handling of the economy, and 43 percent approved.

That poses a challenge for Romney, who is asking voters to fire a president many of them like. So Romney, who also must change the minds of millions of Obama supporters from 2008 to win, is careful not to insult those voters.

Instead, he characterized Obama as having disappointed supporters who expected more.

Weak job growth in August, as the Labor Department reported Friday, provided more fuel for Romney.

"There's almost nothing the president's done in the last three and a half, four years to give the American people confidence he knows what he's doing when it comes to jobs and the economy," Romney told reporters before the event.

Obama's team, in turn, hopes to use the president's favorable personal rating to make him look caring. They point to a line in the speech former President Bill Clinton delivered at the Democratic convention: "I want to nominate a man who's cool on the outside but who burns for America on the inside."

Obama aides think they can counter the incompetence argument by fleshing out old policy proposals with fresh measurable goals, hoping it shows his sense of determination.

Romney said his campaign achieved one of its goals for the Republican convention in Florida last week, which was to make Romney more personable. Much of the convention amounted to a parade by family members, led by his wife, Ann, as well as personal, church and political associates vouching for his character. It was a strong counter to the image painted of him in Obama ads: A wealthy, uncaring businessman who is out of touch.

In that way, Romney did not hesitate to criticize Obama's campaign, but again stopped short of calling into question Obama's character.

"It's been a campaign of pitting one American against another," Romney said. "And it's so contrary to our national history and our national spirit."

(AP) ? More A-listers have signed on to support the third Stand Up to Cancer telethon.

Organizers say Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Justin Timberlake, Sofia Vergara, and Olympic gold medalists Gabrielle Douglas and Missy Franklin will participate in the hour-long TV special. It is set to air Friday on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and more than a dozen cable channels.

The slate of stars announced Wednesday also includes Eric Stonestreet, Ray Romano, Felicity Huffman, Rocco DiSpirito and Maura Tierney. They'll join previously announced participants such as Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Jessica Biel, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Seth Rogen, Emma Stone and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Paltrow also is an executive producer of the fundraiser that will be carried commercial-free from 8-9 p.m. EDT from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Coldplay and Alicia Keys are set to perform during the special, and patients participating in Stand Up to Cancer trials will share their experiences.

Stand Up to Cancer has raised more than $180 million for cancer research and awareness since the telethon was established in 2008. The organization said it has awarded grants to seven multidisciplinary research "Dream Teams" and to scientists seeking innovative approaches to end cancer's role as the world's leading cause of death.

The telethon features a celebrity phone bank that allows donors who call in to talk with the stars.

The cable channels carrying the telethon are BIO, Encore, HBO, Showtime, HBO Latino, ION Television, LMN, Logo, MLB Network, mun2, Palladia, Starz, TBS, Smithsonian and VH1.

Stand Up to Cancer was founded by "Spider-Man" movie producer Laura Ziskin, who produced its first two telethons in 2008 and 2010. Ziskin lost her seven-year fight against breast cancer last year.

ECB unveils aggressive bond plan to save euro

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The European Central Bank unveiled its most ambitious plan yet to ease Europe's financial crisis with a plan to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds to help lower borrowing costs for countries struggling to manage their debts.

Large-scale purchases of short-term government bonds would drive up their price and push down their interest rate, or yield, taking some pressure off of financially stressed governments such as Spain and Italy.

"We will have a fully effective backstop to avoid destructive scenarios," ECB President Mario Draghi said at a press conference, in which he also defended the euro currency union as "irreversible."

After the ECB plan was announced, the yields on government bonds across Europe fell and stock markets rallied.

"This is a potential game-changer," says Jacob Kirkegaard, research fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. "This is the first time the ECB has committed its balance sheet in this way. And the way it is done is politically sustainable in Europe."

The ECB's 23-member governing council approved the plan with only one dissent. The head of Germany's Bundesbank, Jens Weidmann, opposes the plan, arguing that the ECB is moving too far in the direction of financing government deficits, which is prohibited by the European Union treaty.

The ECB's pledge of support came with an important caveat: Countries that want the central bank to help with their borrowing costs must first ask the 17 countries that use the euro to buy their bonds with existing bailout funds and they must submit their economic policies to the scrutiny of the International Monetary Fund.

That puts immense pressure on financially stressed countries such as Spain and Italy ? which have been reluctant to seek help from their euro partners ? to take the next step. Both countries face borrowing rates that are in the upper range of what's sustainable over the long-term.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy refused Thursday to make any commitment to trigger the ECB bond-buying. "When I have something new, I'll tell you," he told reporters at a press conference that was held after he met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti praised the plan as an "important step forward" but said any decisions on Italy's potential request for aid were "premature."

If Spain and Italy were to accept aid from the eurozone's bailout funds, it would put them in the same company as Greece, Ireland and Portugal ? something the two countries have been wary of.

An earlier ECB effort to drive down rates by buying bonds was limited in size ? the ECB spent ?210 billion ($264 billion) ? and did not have lasting impact. The ECB ended that program Thursday.

The ECB first said its new bond-buying plan was in the works on Aug. 2, and markets have climbed steadily since then. Investors across the globe greeted the release of a more detailed plan with further enthusiasm.

The Dow Jones industrial average climbed 244 points to 13,292. Germany's DAX index and France's CAC-40 index each rose roughly 3 percent. The euro rose 0.33 percent during the day to $1.2636.

The interest rates on the three-year and ten-year bonds of Spain and Italy fell in a sign of market anticipation of ECB bond-buying.

"If the current positive market mood continues, the ECB may end up having to buy nothing," said Marco Valli, an analyst at UniCredit bank in Milan.

Other analysts cautioned that while the ECB plan would provide short-term relief to European countries and financial markets, it doesn't address underlying economic weakness across the region, which could persist for years.

Put simply, buying government bonds does not stimulate growth, which has been hurt in Spain, Italy and other countries, in part, by the need to rein in government spending.

Six countries in the eurozone are in recession ? Greece, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Malta and Portugal ? and unemployment across the region is 11.3 percent.

The ECB revised lower its economic forecast for the 17-nation eurozone economy on Thursday, saying it would shrink between 0.2 percent and 0.6 percent in 2012. The bank left its benchmark refinancing rate unchanged at 0.75 percent, a record low.

Here are some of the details of the ECB's bond-buying plan:

? To trigger ECB bond-buying, a country must first ask its euro partners to use one of two bailout funds to buy their bonds at auction. The ECB would then buy bonds with remaining maturities of one to three years on secondary markets until it was satisfied that their interest rate had fallen to a reasonable level.

? The ECB would reveal the amount of bonds it has purchased on a weekly basis. It would reveal their average maturity and the countries that issued them on a monthly basis.

? The ECB will have the same status as private creditors holding bonds in a country. This pledge is intended to reassure private bond investors, who would otherwise worry about being the first to take any losses.

? For each euro the ECB spends on bond-buying, the bank plans to withdraw an equivalent amount from the financial system, by taking deposits or selling notes. This is meant to address concerns that by pumping money into the financial system the ECB could incite inflation.

NY pol's reliance on rabbi comes back to haunt him

NEW YORK (AP) ? When he announced his run for congress in the fall of 2009, future U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm, then a political novice, sorely needed a rainmaker who could get the dollars flowing to his nascent campaign. He found one in an Israeli rabbi, Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto.

Now, that fruitful association has turned into a big headache for the Staten Island Republican ? one involving allegations of illegal donations, a bizarre blackmail claim and potentially embarrassing associations with people in the pornography business.

In mid-August, FBI agents arrested an Israeli businessman who had helped Grimm raise hundreds of thousands of dollars from Pinto's wealthy, zealous followers in New York. The entrepreneur and rabbinical aide, Ofer Biton, was charged with lying about his financial dealings in 2010 when he applied for a U.S. visa.

The arrest came as the FBI has been investigating claims made by other Pinto followers, who say they made tens of thousands of dollars in illegal contributions to Grimm during his 2010 run, including gifts that were passed through straw donors to hide the true source of the donations. FBI agents have recently been requesting records and interviewing people who were on the campaign staff.

Grimm, himself a former FBI agent, has repeatedly declined to be interviewed by The Associated Press about the matter. He has acknowledged raising $250,000 to $300,000 from Pinto's supporters ? about a third of all money contributed in the first 12 months of his campaign ? but denied any knowledge of improprieties.

"My campaign and I followed the fundraising rules, and took reasonable measures to vet the contributions received by my campaign," he said in a statement to the AP. "Indeed, I relied on Rabbi Pinto's status as a clergyman and holy man when agreeing to meet with individuals associated with his congregation."

Campaign records and other public documents make it clear, however, that after tapping the rabbi's followers for money, Grimm wound up getting help from people who candidates normally keep at arm's length.

One of the rabbi's closest aides, Benzion Suky, owned a company that distributed porn videos and has settled lawsuits by adult film studios who accused him of selling bootlegged DVDs, according to court records. Suky and his wife gave a combined $9,600 to Grimm's 2010 campaign and a real estate partnership that lists Suky as its managing member gave $4,800, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Another big donor was Rafi Maman, proprietor of companies in North Bergen, N.J., that distribute adult films and sex toys. He also has settled lawsuits accusing him of bootlegging, including two which also named Suky as a defendant. Maman, his wife and a real estate partnership that he listed as his employer gave $19,200 to Grimm's campaign. That total includes $7,200 in individual contributions from Maman, or $2,400 more than is allowed by law.

A third Grimm contributor, Eli Halali, is listed in business records as the agent of another company that distributed pornographic movies. His name also appears on at least one such video, "Blonde & Beautiful Vol. 1," as the keeper of records verifying that the film's performers were over age 18. He gave $4,800. Two apparent relatives, Bluria Halali and Jaclyn Halali, each contributed $4,800.

Biton, formerly one of Pinto's top aides, also had a hand in adult entertainment. Florida business records list him as being the president of AMOB Inc. The company is registered at the same address as the Miami Playground, a shop once named by an alternative newspaper as the city's the best adult video store.

Election records do not list any donations from Biton, who, as an Israeli citizen without permanent residency in the U.S, is barred from giving money to political candidates.

But the Israeli helped Grimm in other ways that are allowed, including accompanying him on fundraising visits to congregation members, several of whom were heavy hitters in New York's real estate and jewelry businesses.

Suky, who is also a real estate investor, says he is no longer involved in distributing adult films and has now devoted his life to helping Pinto spread his message. During the bootlegging lawsuits, he had argued that he was unaware DVDs he purchased from a supplier were knockoffs.

Halali, who is also a co-owner of a popular chain of New York pizza shops, declined through a relative to comment about his donations. Maman didn't return numerous phone messages. It was unclear whether either man was actively involved in Pinto's congregation.

Grimm told his hometown newspaper on Staten Island, The Advance, that he began cultivating a relationship with Pinto in October of 2009 on the advice of a friend, who thought the rabbi might be helpful raising money.

At age 38, Pinto has achieved a fervent following in Israel, and has become famous there for his connections to political figures and business tycoons, some of whom credit him with mystical powers to bless their deals.

His success as an adviser to the rich and famous has made his organization wealthy; the Israeli edition of Forbes magazine recently ranked Pinto as Israel's 7th richest rabbi, based on organizational holdings. Long based in the Mediterranean port city of Ashdod, Pinto opened a second headquarters in 2002 in New York, where he resides in a $6.5 million town house and delivers sermons in a building purchased in 2009 for $28.5 million.

When Grimm's campaign began, Pinto's U.S. followers had also begun to establish themselves as a source of campaign cash for pro-Israel candidates. A handful had given hundreds of thousands of dollars to political committees controlled by U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, a Virginia Republican, and U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner, a Democrat.

Grimm, a Catholic ex-Marine and a ferocious supporter of Israel, received his first bundle of checks from the rabbi's supporters in December of 2009, just two months after entering the race.

One donor, New York deli owner Josef Ben Moha, said he and his wife gave a combined $4,800.

"It's not something that I had to have my arm twisted. I was asked nicely. I decided he was a nice guy," said Ben Moha, who has been one of Suky's partners in a real estate venture. "The people who seemed to be helping him, they saw good qualities in him. I guess I did too."

In the two years since the election, Pinto's religious organization, Mosdot Shuva Israel, has been a frequent target of media scrutiny. News articles in the Jewish press accused it of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on luxury travel and raised questions about its handling of millions of dollars in donations.

Pinto's own father-in-law, an influential rabbi in Argentina, complained in a court filing that Pinto ? who professes to have no worldly possessions ? had enlisted him in a scheme to conceal his ownership of luxury apartments in Jerusalem.

More recently, a Pinto aide, rabbi Abraham Israel, was detained by Israeli police in April as part of an ongoing investigation into suspected money laundering and theft at an anti-poverty charity, Hazon Yeshaya. A spokesman for Pinto said he had no involvement in that charity.

Large amounts of Shuva Israel's money have also disappeared, according to the organization's lawyers. In December, Pinto and his supporters publicly blamed Biton, claiming he had embezzled large sums. They also made allegations, first reported last year in The New York Times, that Biton had conspired with another member of the congregation to extort money from the rabbi by threatening to plant damaging stories about him in the media.

Biton has called the extortion and embezzlement allegations lies.

In the waning days of the 2010 election, Pinto also began telling associates, including then-Congressman Anthony Weiner, that his support of Grimm had been coerced.

Weiner wound up reporting that murky allegation to the FBI. He told the AP he didn't say anything publicly at the time and won't discuss the details of the rabbi's allegations now, because, "I didn't know whether it was true or not." A law enforcement official confirmed that the FBI had received the report.

Grimm has called any suggestion that he was tied up in some sort of plot with Biton, "profoundly absurd."

The criminal complaint filed against Biton in August makes no mention of blackmail, embezzlement or the campaign allegations, but focuses instead on information he submitted in 2010 when he applied for a visa available to foreigners who invest at least $500,000 in a U.S. business.

In his application, Biton said most of his investment money had been loaned to him by a family friend. But the FBI said it had bank records showing that the money had actually been funneled through an account controlled by an unnamed "co-conspirator," who, in turn, had demanded most of the cash from an unnamed witness to pay off a debt. Biton's lawyer, Jeffrey Udell, declined to comment.

Pinto's attorney in New York, Arthur Aidala, said the rabbi was "very satisfied with the arrest, and looks forward to the prosecution of this defendant and others who have done harm to rabbi Pinto and his family."

The investigation has been more than a distraction for Grimm as he battles for re-election against Democratic challenger Mark Murphy. His campaign has incurred $320,000 in legal fees this year, according to campaign records.

Grimm's lawyer, William McGinley, confirmed that the FBI is probing claims of illegal donations by Pinto's followers, and that the campaign has turned over documents, but he said there is no evidence of any wrongdoing. He said Grimm was being victimized by a smear campaign and "malicious leaks" by law enforcement.

"Yes, there is an investigation, but we have no reason to believe that it will lead to charges and every reason to believe that ... the (Department of Justice) investigation will vindicate Congressman Grimm," McGinley said.

First years hit the trails before their first semester | Trinitonian

First years and Trinity Outdoor Recreation take a break during a hike through the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Photo courtesy of Stephen Muela.

Entering college can be a stressful and anxiety-ridden experience, but Trinity Outdoor Recreation (O-Rec) offers first years a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to relax and make new friends in the countryside of West Texas on the First-year Outdoor Recreation Trip, or FORT. Three first years and two trip leaders went backpacking through the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park for four days and three nights.

?It?s just really great, just being less scared going into Trinity because now you know people, especially upperclassmen. It?s a really nice way to ease into Trinity,? said Stephen Muela (?14), one of the leaders on the trip.

Muela went on the FORT trip when he was a first year and says it really inspired him to major in geoscience and environmental studies.

?It was four days, three nights in the back country, and it was great,? Muela said.

The FORT excursion has been around for several years now, helping first years feel more comfortable about the transition into college life.

?A lot of schools actually do really large pre-orientation trips as a requirement, and I think it would be really great if Trinity did something like this,? Muela said.

First year Catherine Quigley from New Hampshire heard about FORT through one of her friends and decided to sign up.

?I was talking to her online, and she mentioned a really cool-sounding trip,? Quigley said. ?It?s easier for me for adjusting to a new place to live, and Texas is really far away from New Hampshire. I thought it would give me a little bit more confidence.?

First years who attend FORT get to move into their residence halls earlier than other students, which gives them time to get settled and comfortable with their surroundings.

?I?m really glad. It helped; it gave me a lot,? Quigley said.

?I?m very comfortable about San Antonio, I?m comfortable about Trinity,? Quigley said.

O-Rec typically goes backpacking for FORT because it?s a great way for out-of-state students to get to know more about Texas and all the state has to offer. In 2011, the group actually had to travel all the way to Arkansas for FORT because of rampant wildfires in Texas.

As far as future trips, Stephen says there is always something new coming up and really hopes to canoe down Boquillas Canyon one day.

?It should be really pretty. It comes out of the mountains into the desert,? Muela said.

Quigley is very excited to stay involved with O-Rec, and remembers one of her favorite moments of the trip. ?One of the days we climbed Emory Peak, and we didn?t have to wear our backpacks that day. There?s this one part that was like rock climbing. It pretty much was climbing a rock wall without harnesses,? Quigley said. Emory Peak is the highest peak in the Chisos Mountains.

Muela says that O-Rec is really easy to get involved in, and all their trips are geared towards beginners. ?I actually have no extended backpacking experience,? Muela said, ?It made a really big impact on me as a freshman, it really helped shape what I thought I would do. I love geology. I had never been all that outdoorsy before.?

There are many trips coming up, and there are also Thanksgiving trips offered for students who can?t make it home to be with their families. Trip leaders take care of all the cooking and first aid to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for participants.

Too busy to teach your child to ride a bike? Outsource it ...

By Lela Davidson

Cherished parent-child memory, or a major time suck? Some parents are outsourcing the job of teaching kids to ride a bike.

Teaching your child to ride a bike is so pass?. You may think it?s your job to teach balancing, pedaling, and braking, but busy parents now have options.

Canadian writer Rebecca Eckler recently confessed to hiring a professional bike-riding counselor?to school her daughter in the ways of training wheels and banana seats. Oh, the horror, right? What?s next ? a professional Tooth Fairy and an after-school nurse to kiss boo-boos?

The future of parenting is outsourcing!

Nick Pavlakis from Vancouver, B.C.-based Pedalheads says the bicycle instruction business is booming because parents don?t have time and they?lack skills. ?A lot of parents come to us and they?ve tried on their own and found it to be quite a struggle.?

{{/data.answerData}}

In Eckler?s case, squeamishness drove her to seek help. She couldn?t stand the thought of watching her kid fall, and argues?in a post on Mommyish that hiring someone to teach bike riding is no different than doing the same for swimming or music. ?At the end of the day, she knows how to ride a bike. End of story,? she told TODAY Moms. But her post sparked mommy judgment. Why? ?I think it?s just because a lot of people don?t know something like this is available,? she said.

Bike New York offers free bike-riding programs in city parks, summer camps, and after-school programs in New York City. No one seems to be outraged about that. Communications Manager Dan Suraci says demand for instruction is huge. Their weekend classes ? and the waitlist ? are always full.

?Our instructors teach every weekend so they know the common problems and can easily teach to overcome those,? Suraci said. He?also credits the group dynamic. ?Kids have a way of relating to other kids. When they get something and are energized about it, they share with each other.?

She doesn?t think it matters who teaches a child the actual skill of riding a bike.?She agrees with Pavlakis and Suraci that it's often easier for children to learn together with their peers than it is for mom or dad to teach a skill.

?We teach them so much, and they're just tired of us,? says Franz. ?If another person can more effectively teach a child a skill rather than a parent, who can argue with that??

Still, she said,?it does matter who's present for that major milestone in a child's life.

?The experience creates a memory for parents and children ? something they'll miss out on if it is outsourced,? Franz?said.?She encourages moms and dads to consider that before handing off the responsibility to someone else.?

Diane Mizota told TODAY Moms she might have hired out if she?d known she had the option, but is happy that she didn?t. As a single working mom in Los Angeles, Mizota always thought her ex-husband would be the one to teach their son to ride a bike. When that didn?t happen, she questioned whether she was up for the challenge.?

Remembering the moment she finally let go of that seat, she writes, ?I'm still claiming a major mommy victory. I overcame my mental block and earned the bragging rights and discovery that there is no feeling in the world like watching your kid ride a bike for the first time.?

Parenting is not as easy as riding a bike

Parents know that teaching a child to ride a bike can be difficult. Maybe that?s because you can?t really teach them. All we can do is support them while they learn. As in all things parenting, we are powerless over what happens after we let go. Sometimes we have to watch them fall. We can?t outsource that.

But what do I know? I subcontracted the whole thing to my husband.

Intellectual Property and Law | Raw Business Law

bcom-sy-07o-corporate-law2.jpg

Intellectual property is related to things that are created using people?s mental faculties, including inventions, designs, literary and artistic work, etc. There are two categories of intellectual property. These are industrial property and copyright. Trademarks, patents and industrial designs are classified under industrial property, while copyright covers rights related to music, literary work, artistic creations, films, etc.

It was in the 19th century that the expression intellectual property began to become popular. It became commonplace in the 20th century due to extensive usage with the development of the information technology. The legal aspects related to intellectual property rights have evolved over the years. People who own intellectual property are benefited financially due to exclusive rights given to them for their creation. The financial incentive they get encourages them to further invest in intellectual property.

According to economists, approximately 67% of the value of big business houses is because of the intangible assets they have invested in. There is a school of thought that projects protection of intellectual property as a moral issue. The argument is that the human mind is a source of wealth and hence the creations of the mind have to be considered as intellectual property. Therefore, violation of intellectual property amounts to an immoral act. A word, sign or an expression that differentiates a manufacturer or products from another is a trademark. Such terms used for differentiating services are known as service marks. Generally, the trademarks and service marks are treated in the same manner. In exceptional cases, trademark protection is extended to incorporate other aspects of a product.

Trademarks enable people to identify the source of a product easily. There is state as wells federal laws to govern trademarks. In the U.S., the chief federal decree is the Lanham Act that provides extensive protection for trademark. Trademark infringement refers to the confusion created to the consumer, in identifying the source of goods, in connection with the sale of a product. The courts will look into various aspects before deciding on an infringement allegation. The use of the trademark of one manufacturer by another for the same product manufactured amounts to trademark infringement. There are systems to enable enforcement of trademark rights in more than one jurisdiction, but it is not possible to do single trade mark registration that will be applicable throughout the world. The applicability of trademark laws is restricted to a country or jurisdiction.
