Putting The Details Together About Pets ? ArticleDevlist / Dofollow ...

What Do Individuals Need to Think About Before They Buy Dogs?

Investing in a dog can lead to an incredible experience. Frequently, dogs turn into people?s best friends, providing constant companionship. If you are considering purchasing a dog, however, there are a variety of factors you need to take into consideration first. All too often, potential dog owners get so caught-up in their excitement that they don?t think about specific factors they should. The purpose of this article is to make sure you consider all of the most serious factors before you purchase your new dog. A list of important topics is below.

1. Near the beginning of the process you need to evaluate how much time you can devote to your new dog. This can dramatically influence what sort of dog you buy. People who buy dogs, especially puppies, have to spend a vast amount of time each day giving them care. Young dogs must undergo training; typically, owners who have well-behaved adult dogs invested a lot of time into their pets when they were puppies. If you know you will not have time to train a puppy, you should consider looking at older dogs.

2. The location of your home is also a key factor when it comes to selecting the perfect dog for your needs. For example, large dogs need lots of exercise and space to run. Therefore, it isn?t usually the best idea for residents of minuscule apartments to invest in large dogs. However, if you live on a farm, a large dog might be the perfect choice for your family.

You should also think about your neighbors when you are thinking about getting a dog. If, for example, your neighborhood doesn?t allow you to construct a standard fence, you might want to look into getting an underground electric fence to keep your dog from destroying your neighbors? yards. People who have dogs must be courteous to others who live near them.

3. Dogs do require their owners to spend money on occasion. You should, for example, ensure that you have enough money to pay for dog food, veterinary bills, pet toys, and other such expenses. You can comparison shop for some items online before you purchase a dog to get an idea of how much you will need to spend.

4. If you are a parent of young children, it is important for you to look into multiple dog breeds before investing in a dog. Some dogs are great with children, while others can be unpredictable. For parents, it is crucial to invest dogs that will act as awesome friends for their kids.

Astronomers find first multi-planet system around a binary star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? NASA's Kepler mission has found the first multi-planet solar system orbiting a binary star, characterized in large part by University of Texas at Austin astronomers using two telescopes at the university's McDonald Observatory in West Texas. The finding, which proves that whole planetary systems can form in a disk around a binary star, is published in the August 28 issue of the journal Science.

"It's Tatooine, right?" said McDonald Observatory astronomer Michael Endl. "But this was not shown in Star Wars," he said, referring to the periodic changes in the amount of daylight falling on a planet with two suns. Measurements of the star's orbits showed that daylight on the planets would vary by a large margin over the 7.4-Earth-day period as the two stars completed their mutual orbits, each moving closer to, then farther from, the planets (which are themselves moving).

The binary star in question is called Kepler-47. The primary star is about the same mass as the Sun, and its companion is an M-dwarf star one-third its size. The inner planet is three times the size of Earth and orbits the binary star every 49.5 days, while the outer planet is 4.6 times the size of Earth with an orbit of 303.2 days.

The outer planet is the first planet found to orbit a binary star within the "habitable zone," where liquid water could exist and thus create a home for life. However, the planet's size (about the same as Uranus) means that it is an icy giant, and not an abode for life. It's a tantalizing taste of discoveries waiting to be made.

The combination of observations from the NASA mission and McDonald Observatory allowed astronomers to understand the characteristics of Kepler-47's two stars and two planets.

The Kepler mission looks for minute dips in the amount of light coming from a star that might indicate a planet is passing in front of it, an event called a "transit." The space telescope is also adept at identifying eclipsing binary stars, in which two stars pass in front of each other as they orbit each other. In the case of Kepler-47, they found both stellar eclipses and planet transits in one system.

So Kepler astronomers Jerome Orosz (lead author on the study) and William Welsh of San Diego State University flagged the Kepler-47 system as worthy of follow up from the ground. They asked the McDonald Observatory Kepler team to work with them.

Endl studied the binary star with the 9.2-meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET, one of the world's largest telescopes), as well as the 2.7-meter Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald.

"The challenging thing is that this is a very faint star," Endl said, "about 6,000 times dimmer than can be seen with the naked eye."

He was taking spectra of the system -- looking for characteristics in its light to indicate the motions of the primary star. (The secondary star is too faint to measure.) The McDonald observations enabled astronomers to calculate the mass of the primary star.

These values, along with the Kepler eclipse and transit timings, were plugged into a model that calculated the relative sizes of all the bodies involved, Endl said.

The Kepler team at McDonald Observatory also includes Bill Cochran (a co-Investigator of the Kepler mission), research scientist Phillip MacQueen, graduate students Paul Robertson and Eric Brugamyer, and recent graduate Caroline Caldwell.

"This is the type of research where McDonald Observatory really excels," Cochran said. "We have excellent scientific instruments on our telescopes, and the queue-scheduled operation of the HET allows us to obtain spectra at the optimal times when they will give us the best information about the stars."

Hear that rumble? It's San Jose

(MORE: Part 1, with Nos. 11-19 in the rankings, is here)

10. Montr?al Impact ??The Impact has won five in a row and keeps closing the distance between their expansion selves and D.C. United. They have played more games than other teams in the East, so the margin for error is thin as sandwich-cut Canadian bacon. Still, every in-season signing is proving to be a handy one, and there?s a lot of reason to be excited about the late-summer stretch around Stade Saputo.

9. Real Salt Lake ??The schedule has granted a tiny reprieve for RSL with a full week between matches. Whew! That makes this Friday?s contest at home with D.C. United (which is dealing with its own taxing stack-up of matches) an absolute, positively ?gotta have? for Jason Kreis and Co. The men of Rio Tinto have collected just 1 of a possible 12 points in MLS matches since late July. That will not get it done going forward.

8. Columbus Crew ??There can be no doubt that Jairo Arrieta and Federico Higuain can be difference-makers in MLS. So now it?s about finding the best role for dependable veteran Eddie Gaven, getting the rest of the midfield mix just right and squeezing a little more production from dynamic wide man Dilly Duka. And, they?ve got points to make up in the standings ? but these are surely exciting times around Crew Stadium. (Oh, goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum looks OK after last week?s injury scare. So, good news there, too.)

7. Chicago Fire ??The off-week saw Chicago hold its place at fourth in the East while the teams on either side failed to take full points. So, that part worked out pretty well. This week?s visit by Houston? Yeah, check the box on ?big match? for this one.

6. Houston Dynamo ??The Dynamo can?t be beaten at home ? but these draws lately rather than wins are doing some damage. A week ago it was Columbus holding Houston to a tie. In Round 25, Toronto scored late to split the points out of BBVA Compass Stadium. To be an elite team in MLS, teams cannot be losing late leads at home against the bottom club from the East. (No offense, TFC.)

5. Angeles Galaxy ??Minus Landon Donovan and on a lesser afternoon from David Beckham, the Galaxy professionally managed out a 2-0 win over previously hot Dallas. Juninho was big in this one, and Josh Saunders reminded everyone why the Galaxy has a more handsome record when he?s in goal. Another busy week is ahead as Bruce Arena?s men host Puerto Rico in a Champions League encounter and then look to put some distance on fifth-place Vancouver with a weekend contest at the Home Depot Center.

4. Seattle Sounders ??Fredy Montero is on one of his runs. Watch him go! Eddie Johnson still has plenty to offer and Mauro Rosales (pictured above)?has assumed leadership in MLS assists with 13. The defense and goalkeeping hasn?t quite arrived into the same spiffy place, but everything else looks just so around CenturyLink Field. Christian Tiffert is fitting in nicely in the midfield, looking quite selfless about it all. That?s positive, too. The Sounders are 5-1-2 in MLS since June.

source:

3. New York Red Bulls ??Holy, Frenchman! Did the Red Bulls ever miss their veteran DP striker last week as Thierry Henry sat out while bringing a new, little Frenchman into the world. (Congrats, man!) On one hand, the Red Bulls offense was a complete, rudderless mess. On the other hand, credit for finding a way to grind out a 1-1 draw at Sporting Kansas City. The same teams meet twice more this year; those matches will say a lot about 2012 Eastern Conference supremacy. Heath Pearce ?(pictured, right), by the way, has been quite a mid-season pickup.

2. Sporting Kansas City ??There?s a lot to fret over this week. Start with the 1-1 draw with New York, where Sporting KC dominated and pressured relentlessly, as always, but failed to stick enough past the Red Bulls defense to gather all three points. Teal Bunbury?s season-ending injury is a huge downer, and Roger Espinoza?s potential departure to Wigan would remove the team?s best midfielder at present. Otherwise, all is well.

1. San Jose Earthquakes ? How does it happen that San Jose cracks four and Chris Wondolowski doesn?t get any of them? Same difference, I suppose, as the league leaders quickly got past last week?s loss at Montreal by clobbering southbound Colorado. With a home and road set dead away against struggling Chivas USA and a match at Buck Shaw against the beleaguered Timbers, San Jose could easily have a commanding hold on the Supporters Shield title by mid-September. Only team at this point that might have something to say about it: Sporting Kansas City.

Reddit is getting a fundraising button

33 min.

Being ?the front page of the Internet? comes with power, and Redditors have often, if not a bit spontaneously, channeled that power for fundraising.

Among their good deeds: giving a bullied senior citizen bus monitor a $700,000 vacation budget, scrounging up $31,000 overnight to help a three-year-old who needed a bone marrow transplant, and contributing more than $180,000 to Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

Now, for the first time, Reddit users will be able to execute some of these fundraisers within Reddit-branded pages.

Starting today, managers of the site's topic pages, or Subreddits, can opt to accept donations to specific nonprofits by installing new "Donate" buttons on their Subreddit pages. The TwoXChromosomes Subreddit, for instance, will add a button to support She's the First, an organization that supports girls' education in the developing world.

The buttons and the donation system they're attached to, Reddit Donate, were developed by payment startup Dwolla in partnership with another payment startup called Stripe. It will launch with 12 nonprofit partners, including Kiva, Charity: Water, and DonorsChoose.?

Many Subreddits are already active fundraisers. The atheism Subreddit, for instance, helped raise more than $200,000 for Doctors Without Boarders by directing traffic to a third-party fundraising page.

Without a Reddit tool for accepting donations, most fundraising Redditors have, like the athiest group, pointed each other to crowd funding sites such as Indiegogo, independent funding sites, and custom landing pages on charities' websites to contribute.

At times it can be unclear, however, where the money is actually going. Money raised for the bullied bus monitor's vacation, for instance, was collected on an Indiegogo page that was not set up in her name, but a Redditor's name. If a less scrupulous person had created the page, the story may have lost its happy ending.

?We want to protect our community, and for it to know that if it donates $100, that it's going to the right person and not to various fees,? Erik Martin, the general manager of Reddit, tells Fast Company.

Dwolla removes credit card numbers from transactions--and with them a handful of third-party financial-service providers?-and thus is able to charge an impressively low fee of $.25 for transactions more than $10 (transactions involving less than that are free). Money travels directly from donors' bank accounts to nonprofits' bank accounts. Stripe keeps the credit card in the process and charges 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.?

Reddit has taken other steps to support charitable efforts initiated in its site, but none so significant.

Earlier this month, the site named Crowdtilt its official fundraising partner. A newly-launched startup, Crowdtilt enables anyone to raise money for any kind of project, and it promised Reddit to wave fees and verify that donated money ends up where it is intended.

It's difficult to verify how organizations that aren't registered nonprofits are spending their money, so the Dwolla and Stripe button only applies to nonprofit partners for now. That leaves out the individual-specific causes Reddit is famous for supporting.

Ben Milne, the CEO of Dwolla, tells Fast Company that if Redditors embrace it, there's likely room for the project to evolve. For now, the new feature formalizes a giving habit that has already become part of Reddit's reputation.

?It?s just like anyone could always raise money for their project," says Milne, "but it got way easier when Kickstarter launched.??

Trying To Sell A Home In Southwestern Montana | REALTOR.com ...

questions

Q: We own a vacation home in southwestern Mt. Is there a realtor that has access throughout the US. to sell homes. The house is in a rather remote spot, and I need someone who can advertise it far and wide. The local realtor has not done a good job spreading the word outside of the general area. Looking for someone who is eager to sell vacation homes in this part of the country.
?Anonymous, Polaris, MT,p>A: Check with your agent, are they advertising on Realtor.com and do their properties feed thru the local MLS out to the Internet? You may be getting more exposure than you realize. Best thing to try is to Google your address and see where it shows up. If your agent is not fully using the Internet, ask why and see if they can do more on the Internet, most sites are very easy to post on. Also ask your agent to provide recent sale data to be sure you are competitively priced and how long is average days on market. In my area (Sierra Mts in Ca) the more remote vacation areas can take a long time to sell. If you still need a new agent many companies do belong to International referral services, such as Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, that can find real estate agents to represent you locally and out to the world.
Teri Andrews Murch is a Realtor? with Lyon Real Estate in Auburn, CA.

A: Hello.

Realtors are usually licensed in only one state but they doesn?t prevent them from advertising anywhere. So find an agent licensed in Montana that will advertise through any number of websites.

If you have a listing agreement with the agent read it carefully; you may be liable for a commission to him. See an attorney to get an answer to that questions.

I wish you well.

HBT: Orioles acquire Saunders from D-backs

As first reported by CBS Sports? Jon Heyman, the Orioles have acquired lefty starter Joe Saunders in a waiver trade from Arizona. Matt Lindstrom, a right-handed reliever, is headed to the Diamondbacks in return along with a player to be named later.

Saunders passed through waivers on Friday and was at that point eligible to be dealt to any team. The 31-year-old has posted a decent 4.22 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 130 innings this season, but the D?Backs have a number of young arms in their system and did well to land a reliable setup man in their return?package from the O?s.

Lindstrom, 32, registered a 2.72 ERA and 1.29 WHIP across 36 1/3 innings this year for Baltimore.

Saunders will be eligible for free agency this offseason. He?s earning $6 million in his final year of?arbitration.

San Francisco Wedding Trends And Cool New Wedding-Inspired ...

I recently attended the Modern Luxury Weddings show held at The Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco. As I strolled?among?the 80 wedding vendors that filled the ornate ballrooms, I noticed some strong trends happening in the Bay Area wedding industry. I also noticed the way today?s modern DIY bride manages her prospective wedding has changed a great deal since I planned my own wedding five years ago.

The disposable cameras of yesteryear have been replaced with wedding apps that allow guests to check in or sign up at weddings to share their pictures with fellow guests. The headache of multiple CDs are over with photo-sharing services like Wedding Snap which instantly collects all the guest?s photos into one online album.

There is a growing number of wedding Apps now available on the iPhone and iPad to help brides manage their budget, guest lists, to do lists and much more. The recently launched I Do Venues app is designed to make the process of finding the perfect wedding venue an easier one. It offers a comprehensive directory designed to search for the best wedding venues in California.

The modern bride relies on wedding blogs to find inspiration and DIY tips on how to recreate certain design aspects themselves, rather than investing in expensive wedding magazines that are overrun by advertising. The I Do Venues? daily blog and app offers brides the opportunity to see various venues showcased in a variety of themes, color palettes and design styles alongside inspirational photo galleries. Sweet Lauren Cakes Wedding Cake Pops

Wedding Cake Pops (Photo Credit: Sweet Lauren Cakes)

The photo booth is growing in popularity at weddings as it offers a fun and interactive way to capture guests having fun and gives them a great memento to take home with them. There were a large number of them at the show but I particularly liked The Original Traveling Photo Booth for the personalized add-ons they offered including: thank you cards, photo strip collage and a great photo strip guest book.

Did you know that you can have a tired wedding cake made of cake pops? Cake pops are a trendy feature at weddings; whether you choose to have them as pretty favors on the tables or add a wow factor to a color coordinated dessert table. Lauren Martin the proprietor of Sweet Lauren Cakes showed us how versatile cake pops are, and can be made to any color palette or theme.

If a big and expensive wedding isn?t your cup of tea, then perhaps you want to join a growing number of people who chose elope instead. The company elopeinwinecountry offers couples an all-inclusive and affordable alternative by providing a unique, romantic garden setting, professional photography and personalized ceremony in the heart of the wine country.

Whether you chose to have a big blow out or a more intimate gathering for your wedding, there are so many tools available to make the planning process stress-free. TV repairs in Perth, electrician perth - IdeaMarketers.com

After years of saving money, now you can finally afford to purchase your own house. Even if you can't afford to buy a brand new and built from the ground with your specifications and design, still buying a pre-owned house is a feat that you are about to accomplish. There really is nothing wrong with beginning to live independently and starting off with buying and using second-hand items, your house included.

New Old House

If you are on the lookout for buying your very own home check out the classified ads or talk to realtors directly. Once you see the house that you want and if it is within your budget range, make sure that everything inside is still safe.

Hiring an electrician in Perth and having your house checked must be on the top of the priority list. You don't want your house burned down to the ground because of faulty electrical wiring. The electrician can also rewire your house and help you install your entertainment system (used or repaired), smoke alarms or just do a routine maintenance check-up to help you feel at ease that your house is electrically sound.

You can make an old house look like new once again. Every house has its own personality, get to know your "new ?old' house" and bring out its personality partnered with yours.

It doesn't matter if you can't afford a brand new house, the important thing is that you make it a home and you can call it your own. Just make sure that everything is working properly and that you are safe inside your home.

Used appliances

When furnishing your home, you can start by buying appliances that are not brand new. Of course when you can afford to buy it new, then by all means do so. The point is that there is nothing wrong with used items. If you have an old and broken TV, before throwing it away, consider having it repaired. TV repairs in Perth can be easily found everywhere. There are also shops that would go to your home and repair it on site.

Even your living room can be furnished with used items. If you see a couch or a living room set that is being sold cheaply at flea markets and you can see that it can still be repaired, then think outside the box and have it re-upholstered. Re-upholstering can be cheaper than buying brand new.

The possibilities are endless if you know how to save money and do things on your own.

Banking Sector on Verge of Bankruptcy as Bank Al Maghirb Fails to ...

By Loubna Flah

Morocco World News

Casablanca, August 25, 2012

Seemingly, the measures undertaken by Morocco?s central bank, Bank Al Maghrib, to alleviate the severe lack of liquid assets have failed to supply the banking sector with enough liquidity.

Sources close to Bank Al Maghrib confirmed that the bank liquidity deficit increased from 61 billion in June Dirham to 71 in July.

In an attempt to ease the liquidity strains felt by commercial banks and to prevent a systemic crisis, Morocco?s central bank had repeatedly pumped massive liquidity in the banking system.

With a lack of stable funds from depositors and other institutions, the commercial banks capacity to finance loans and other transactions has been severely impaired. If the liquidity crisis endures, commercial banks are more likely to face problems in responding to demands for money transfers and withdrawals.

Observers noticed a considerable delay in the examination of loans request submitted to most of the Moroccan commercial banks. Many customers complain about the time required to examine loan demands in many national banks.

During the last 16 months the liquidity deficit has increased by 49 billion dirham. A predictable impact of the liquidity crisis is the sharp rise in loan interests which has reached 8, 5% per year.

In this highly strained context, Bank al Maghrib is expected to intervene periodically to alleviate the impact of liquidity crisis. Attijari Wafabank, one of the major commercial banks in Morocco, has previously warned the central bank about a potential nationwide bankruptcy in the banking sector.

The availability of liquid assets is highly influenced by behavioral factors such as cash circulation assets deposits and withdrawals.

The crisis was initially engendered by a massive withdrawal of assets from the business circle. The panic prevailed among clients when the General Directorate for Taxes launched a large scale seizure operation on their bank accounts without a prior notice.

In a highly constrained economic environment marked by instability, the lack of liquidity is likely to disrupt the financial market. It may also put banks at a risk of a long lasting insolvency.

Iran Universities To Ban Women From 77 Fields of Study

New submitter jasper160 writes "An August 20th, 2012 announcement from Iran places restrictions on female university students. Iran will be cutting 77 fields of study from the female curriculum, making them male-only fields. Science and engineering are among those affected by the decree. 'The Oil Industry University, which has several campuses across the country, says it will no longer accept female students at all, citing a lack of employer demand. Isfahan University provided a similar rationale for excluding women from its mining engineering degree, claiming 98% of female graduates ended up jobless.' The announcement came soon after the release of statistics showing that women were graduating in far higher numbers than men from Iranian universities and were scoring overall better than men, especially in the sciences. Senior clerics in Iran's theocratic regime have become concerned about the social side-effects of rising educational standards among women." And Where, Are The Innovators? Part 2 ? Paradigm Shift

Read part one here.

Mini-dv?camera?s had come down in price and was fastly replacing Hi-8 or Super-8 digital video, and non-linear editing was readily available, costly if using legitimate software, but it was there to use for the every man ? top that with computers that were growing faster then?we had ever seen, and yet come down in price as well, and there was a real?boon?for the independent filmmaker. Musicians had failed to take their talents to themselves and stupidly left their careers in the hands of the music industry that was still doling out multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts to artists that popped up out of the college radio crowds, or night club music scenes ? and they had watched their record company lose millions on illegal downloads. This could have been mainly avoided had the artists sold their own music, for a fraction of the cost of a cd at the time, as well as some other creative methods. They didn?t.

In the movie world there was the Blair Witch Project, which was filmed?with consumer grade camera?s, hi-8 I believe, with mini-dv?having a higher resolution, some well known?directors were even filming movies on higher end cameras using mini-dv. With the box office success of The Blair Witch Project, and say what you want about the movie, it showed the power of technology and what artists could do with the internet, promotion and the new camera?s. It really seemed like filmmaking, and the good old boys of hollywood would be on the ropes. This is where the modern artistic movement was going to come from, filmmakers with vision, given the freedom to express themselves as they see fit, with out the over bearing retarded movie studios telling them what and how they should do their movies.

I wanted to be?a relevant name in my generation of art, I wanted to be?an innovator?in the movement that would be remembered, I had thought that was still being a novelist ? filmmaking?before the digital age, was like the publishing world, only worse, to be?an independent?filmmaker?with film, you needed hundreds of thousands of dollars just for film and equipment and developing said film. With digital you could shrink that to a couple thousands?of dollars, more so with editing on a pc and not splicing film with a physical cutter, putting into a computer and then exporting it to film again. No, the art was to be?in the hands of the artists. I made my first film, a short film, then an hour and a half sci-fi epic using blue screen in most shots, taught myself how to build 3d?models and animate in 3d?animation, comped shots, rotoscoping, sound design, adr, etc. Cast of the second film was around 20 people, we had to invent costumes, worlds, and vehicles, it was one of the greatest experiences in the world. It was also the most frustrating endeavour?and would lead me to an eventual break from filmmaking to this day. In fact that was still the last movie I directed. I starred in another feature, while helping with the script and direction and producing, and created a tv show, starred in it and released the directing reigns to someone else, even the producing, staying on as one of the stars, writer, and executive producer, only to see the project still stuck in post production waste land.

What had gotten to me was having to count on other people to do things that didn?t take it as seriously as you did (as the creator) and more importantly, it was the technology. It burned me out, years of frustration with too slow computers, over clocking my pc?s, the technology changing while you work, HD taking over and making mini-dv?obsolete?in the middle of making these movies. The tv show was shot?in full HD, but the previous movies were either mini-dv?or first gen hd, and the picture quality when rendered with effects and comping simply wasn?t worth the amount of time it took just to finish a fairly simple shot. The technology was too limiting, too slow, and you couldn?t really compete with the big screen and hollywood.

Cut to today. Looking at the software and hardware available, and most importantly distributors?like Itunes, you have as an artist a genuine money making?digital distributer that reaches almost everyone in the world ? you also have you?re own website etc ? and you finally have computers and camera?s that can create a HD movie with the same or relatively?close to the same quality as a hollywood movie. But where are the slick new filmmakers? Where are these films? Where are the directors and writers that are sick of the merry go ?round of hollywood films regurgitated over and over? Why have they still not taken the reigns of their own careers and shaped their own destiny, eventually leveraging big distributors to make a deal to get more quality and original films in the theaters as well?

One of the biggest?questions?I have over this generation, is that self-reliance?on art as a business, has never been so available. We literally have every avenue available to us to use in order to?provide alternatives to hollywood, publishing, and the music industry, but there?s something missing. In my opinion it rests on the fantasy of the home run, a fantasy that plagued me as a young artist, that you could swing for the fences and get rich and just be a part of the system. But we all look around and complain how bad the system is. How lifeless pop culture has become, and yet none of us have the faith? to change it.

Where are the innovators? My frustration with other people, spelled out above, was born from this concept. I cannot innovate on my own, others need to jump on board or it won?t work. One or two artists doing things like this will not change anything, artists who create quality art need to take their livelihoods into their own hands, and hasn?t that what artists have always dreamt of?

Birmingham Health Care's CEO became its landlord, renting space ...

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Jonathan Dunning's path from being CEO of a pioneering nonprofit health clinic system in Birmingham to being its landlord began in 2008, when he and three other Birmingham Health Care employees bought a building on the city's Southside.

It wasn't just any building. It was Birmingham Health Care's largest asset -- bought by its top employees in a sale ap?proved by members of the board of direc?tors.

Birmingham Health Care board member and treasurer Terry Burney said the board approved the sale of BHC's South Medical Plaza building at 1600 20th St. South. But he said he couldn't recall whether it was dis?closed to the board that the buyers were then-current BHC employees in a company run by Dunning called Synergy Real Estate Holdings.

"The board did approve based on what we saw," Burney said. "When we allow attorneys to handle things, we often leave it in their hands . . . . As I recall, it was a win-win thing for all involved."

[READ MORE: Follow Mike Oliver's Birmingham Health Care reports here]

For a time in 2008, Dunning was at the helm of BHC as it paid rent to his for-profit company. In 2009, a federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Agency (HRSA) awarded BHC more than $100,000 for construction work in its clinics and pav?ing the parking lot, plus more than $350,000 to buy new equipment for the Synergy-owned building. The grant writer was BHC clinical psychologist Sharon Waltz, one of the part owners of the building. BHC Chief Operating Officer Patricia Osborne, another part owner in the building, oversaw the construction and renovation projects.

HRSA -- Birmingham Health Care's chief source of funds -- has a policy prohibiting conflicts of interest where federal money is at stake -- "such as when the employee, officer, or agent . . . has a financial or other interest in the firm selected for an award." The agency also has a policy requiring explicit justification for "lack of competition when competitive bids or offers are not obtained."

In a written response to questions, a HRSA spokesman pointed out the policies and said all grantees must adhere to them -- but did not comment on whether BHC was in violation.

"At this time, HRSA has not taken enforcement actions related to the sale or lease of the building," wrote spokesman Martin Kramer.

Birmingham Health Care lawyer Ken Dowdy said BHC pays fair market rent to Dunning's company and that the $2.8 million sale was "a substantial profit" to BHC.

But BHC originally bought the building in 2002 for at least $2.6 million. That's the size of the mortgage it took out on the building, known then as the McCollough Facial Surgery Clinic, according to probate records.

Burney, who also is chief administrative analyst for Birmingham Mayor William Bell, said he remembered that the deal allowed the clinic to retire debt, get some cash for operations and "focus on why we started in the beginning -- to deliver health care to the underserved."

Waltz said she remembered the building sale was pitched by Dunning as a good deal for BHC.

She said that, to the best of her recollection, she received a small percentage interest in the company -- 1.5 percent. She said COO Osborne also received 1.5 percent; and CFO Terri Mollica received 5 percent, with the remaining portion going to Dunning and the company.

Dunning, Osborne and Mollica -- all listed along with Waltz on the incorporating papers for the Synergy company -- did not return phone calls or emails seeking comment.

"Most of this was Dunning's decision," Waltz said. "I didn't know very much about the infrastructure of the company (Synergy)."

Waltz said she has sent a letter asking that her share of the company be re-distributed to other owners of the company, but she said she has not heard back.

Real estate

For Dunning, the $2.8 million real estate sale marked the beginning of another avenue of business connected to the health clinic system for the poor and homeless.

Earlier, The Birmingham News reported that Dunning formed for-profit companies in 2006 while CEO of both Birmingham Health Care and Central Alabama Comprehensive Care, a community health center in Tuskegee and that did business with the organizations he was running. From 2007 through 2010, the Birmingham and Tuskegee health centers paid more than $2 million to Dunning's companies for various services such as billing and management, The News reported.

Already CEO and primary private contractor for BHC, Dunning added another title with the 2008 Southside building purchase -- landlord. The next year, after leaving his CEO position, he began expanding that role.

In 2009, he formed another real estate company, bought a building in north Birmingham and began renting more space to Birmingham Health Care for a clinic.

The new company, Synergy Real Estate Holdings II, which lists only Dunning as a member in its incorporation papers, on Dec. 23, 2009, bought for $1.08 million a clinic building that was associated with the old Physician's Medical Center Carraway.

In 2010, Dunning's companies were billing BHC at least $1.2 million in rents and other management and service contracts, according to an independent audit of BHC. That represents more than 10 percent of BHC's revenue of $11.3 million for that year.

The same year, Dunning formed another real estate company, Synergy Real Estate Holdings III, which included Birmingham Health Care as a partner. Synergy III borrowed $839,236 from Citizens Trust to purchase the abandoned New City Church/Urban Missions building at 2030 First Ave. North, according to probate records. Plans for the building included renting more space to Birmingham Health Care, in addition to a restaurant, wine shop and other office space.

The 2030 building is empty and being renovated.

In 2011, Dunning jointly refinanced the South Plaza and the old Carraway property for $5.18 million -- a $1.3 million gain over Dunning's combined purchase prices for those two properties, according to probate records.

Taxes

While it is not unheard of for nonprofits form relationships with, or even create, for-profit companies, the question becomes, how do those arrangements benefit the nonprofit and its mission, and are the arrangements properly disclosed on the Internal Revenue Service Form 990, said Allison Black Cornelius, principal consultant of Blackfish, a consulting firm serving as the int erim management contractor for the Alabama Association of Nonprofits.

The role of Dunning and BHC employees in the $2.8 million purchase of the South Medical Plaza was not reported on BHC's 2009 tax forms. Nor was his role as landlord to BHC's North Birmingham clinic in the old Carraway property.

On the 2008 990 tax form signed by CFO Mollica, the organization was asked whether "a current or former officer, director, trustee or key employee have a direct business relationship with the organization." "No' is the answer on the form.

On the 2009 tax form, signed by Dunning's replacement as CEO, Jimmy Lacey, the same question also was answered "no."

Cornelius said that, in the past five years, the nonprofit sector has seen an increase in the creation of for-profit or taxable subsidiaries for many reasons, including generating income, protecting the nonprofit's tax exempt status or finding untapped sources of funding.

"Nonprofits are allowed to generate surpluses or net revenue, which are the equivalent of profits, as long as they don't distribute them to board members or employees," she said. "If they do, it is known as private inurement. We recommend to nonprofits that the keys to success in creating these kinds of arrangements are public transparency of the structure, a clear relation to the nonprofit's purpose, and most important -- profits generated must benefit no individuals other than clients served through the mission."

Birmingham Health Care was founded in 1985 as Birmingham Health Care for the Homeless, part of a 19-city pilot program funded by private foundation money but that now runs mostly on public money, the majority coming from federal grants.

Board member Burney said the board is looking into some of the issues raised about BHC's con-tracts, real estate and rental arrangements.

"We are going to look back and see what's in the best interest of the organization and see about getting the best bang for our buck . . . all of those things will be reviewed," Burney said. "It's kind of hard to say things were done wrong if you don't have all the details. We have to look at things. (The Birmingham News) did that part, so now it's up to the board to do our part. We are not sitting still.

"At the end of the day our desire is for this whole thing to be resolved, to go away, so we can continue to provide health care services -- because there is a big need for it in the area."

HRSA -- Birmingham Health Care's chief source of funds -- has a policy prohibiting conflicts of interest where federal money is at stake -- "such as when the employee, officer, or agent . . . has a financial or other interest in the firm selected for an award." The agency also has a policy requiring explicit justification for "lack of competition when competitive bids or offers are not obtained."?

Facebook stops hoarding your deleted photos

7 hrs.

About three years ago, the folks at tech blog Ars Technica called attention to the fact that Facebook keeps your deleted photos on its servers long after you believe them to be gone.?Now,?this rather unnerving issue?appears to be a concern of the past. The social network is reportedly?beginning to remove photos after you delete them.

Ars Technica's Jacqui Cheng writes that?a Facebook spokesperson explained that the social network has been "been working hard to move [its] photo storage to newer systems which do ensure photos are fully deleted."

If you don't understand why this is pretty darn important, let's go back to Ars Technica's original investigation, which happened in 2009.?The blog's staff checked on Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, and Twitter's data retention habits by deleting photos and then trying to view each image via its original direct link:

Though it took mere seconds for Twitter and Flickr to remove the photos from their content delivery networks (CDNs) after deletion from the site, MySpace and Facebook weren't so quick. MySpace got around to deleting the photos from its CDN several months later, but Facebook ended up being the embarrassing holdout.

This means that anyone who happened to have the direct link to an image ?which can be found by right-clicking on an image and opening it in a new window?? could continue?viewing photos you deleted. (The image would have disappeared from your albums and regular Facebook pages instantly, of course.)

Right now, according to Cheng's tests, it takes Facebook about two days to completely remove an image from its servers, rendering even direct links useless.??A Facebook spokesperson told Ars Technica that this is a result of recent changes. "As a result of work on our policies and infrastructure, we have instituted a 'max-age' of 30 days for our CDN links," he said. "However, in some cases the content will expire on the CDN much more quickly, based on a number of factors." Facebook representative Fred Wollens provided NBC News with a similar explanation.

Thirty days are still a?ridiculously?long amount of time for?embarrassing?or otherwise undesirable photos continue being accessible on Facebook after deletion, but better that they disappear late than never.

Six things to love (and hate) about the Nintendo 3DS XL

14 hrs.

For the second time in its history, Nintendo has taken its handheld gaming gadget and blown it up to an?extra large size. And for the second time, it looks like Nintendo has made a smart move.

The super-sized version of Nintendo's 3DS game machine -- the 3DS XL -- hits shelves Sunday. And like the Nintendo DSi XL (the embiggened version of the Nintendo DSi, which launched back in 2010) this extra large?3-D game machine proves that bigger really?is better.

I've spent some time with the 3DS XL and I've found it to be a?very solid gaming gadget, one that improves upon its diminutive?sibling in small, smart ways, and that, for my needs, is?the preferable version of the two gaming?devices.

The 3DS is a dual-screen?game machine that lets players see 3-D images on its top screen?without having to wear funky 3-D glasses.?I reviewed the original when it launched back in March, 2011, and at that time I came up with this list of what I loved and loathed about the gadget.

I'm revisiting that format here with the 3DS XL. What follows is a look at the highs and lows of the new (and I think improved) 3DS XL?and a few things ?to consider when deciding whether to buy.

THE?GOOD

The bigger screens
Thee whole point of ?Nintendo's newest handheld game gadgets,?is that they?display your?games in eye-popping 3-D. And it is here where the 3DS XL leaps past the original 3DS.?The XL provides top and bottom screens that are 90 percent bigger than the original?3DS' screens (4.88 inches on the top and 4.18 inches on the bottom) .?

And perhaps not surprisingly, this extra real estate?means players get?a much bigger and better view of the 3-D?digital worlds before them. Indeed,?once you've played a game on the 3DS XL, you really won't want to go back to the 3DS' smaller screen.

The down side of these bigger screens: The screen resolution has not been upgraded along with the screen?size. But more on that below.

The sleek?design
The 3DS XL delivers a really superb?refresh to the 3DS's design.?The boxier feel of the original is replaced by curvier, sleeker lines that both look better and feel better in your hands.?

Meanwhile, though the screens are 90 percent bigger, the 3DS XL itself?is, in fact, not all that much bigger than the original 3DS.??Looking at the two devices stacked up (below), you can see that the XL probably won't fit?conveniently?in your pocket (unless you're a kangaroo ... or wearing cargo pants) but it really doesn't take up all?that much more room.

And as an added improvement, the 3DS' glossy (and?rather easily smudged and?scuffed) finish has been replaced with a nice matte finish.

More memory
The 3DS XL?comes pre-packaged?with a 4 GB SD memory?card, which is double what the 3DS comes with. That's a nice bonus considering that Nintendo is giving gamers the option of buying its?traditionally?cartridge-based games as digital downloads instead. For instance, when "New Super Mario Bros. 2" launches Sunday, you can pick it up in a store or download it to your 3DS' SD card from Nintendo's eShop.

Longer battery life
Nintendo says that the 3DS XL has an?improved battery life of 3.5 to 6.5 hours (depending on what you're doing) compared to the 3 to 5 hours offered by the original 3DS. Doesn't sound like much,?but more is better and I have noticed the difference.

The stylus
The placement of a?stylus holder?wouldn't seem like a particularly vital?thing. But if you're going to make a stylus an important?part of your gadget's experience in these mostly-stylus-free days then it better be conveniently located. ?With the original 3DS, the telescoping stylus could be found in a hole in the back, left of 3DS. It was an awkward location and I often found myself fumbling to find it. And then, of course, I'd have to take the time to extend it to its full length.?

With the 3DS XL, Nintendo has returned the stylus to where it was on the DSi,?putting the single-piece?pen?right where it seems to belong:?on the right side, where your hand is already resting.?It seems like a small thing, but it's actually a noticeable?improvement.

The lid hinge
When I reviewed the 3DS, I made note of the annoyingly floppy hinge. My top screen felt loose and didn't seem to want to stay in place as solidly as I would have liked it to. That's a problem since, if you want to see the 3-D images on the top screen you have to keep the screen aligned with your eyes properly. With the 3DS XL the?clam shell?lid has been tightened up and the top screen stays right where you want it to.

THE NOT-SO-GOOD

The cameras
Despite the headline above, there's not much about the 3DS XL that I truly?"hate." Except one thing ... or rather, three things: the cameras.?There's no ?way to say it nicely: the three cameras on the Nintendo 3DS XL stink.

These cameras are the same as the cameras on the original 3DS. And sure, it's cool that the two outward-facing?cameras let you capture 3-D snapshots of your friends. But those two cameras and?the?one inward-facing camera can only?take .3 megapixel snapshots. Yes. POINT 3 megapixels. Talk about low-resolution. It's like Nintendo traveled?back in time and grabbed digital cameras from a decade ago.?

The pictures are grainy and uninspiring. One need only look at just how popular something like Instagram is?to see just how photograph-obsessed we all are these days. Nintendo really missed an opportunity when it didn't improve the cameras on the 3DS XL.

Bigger screens ... same resolution
While the 3DS XL boasts beefed up screen sizes, the?resolutions on the top and bottom screens have no extra beef. As with the 3DS, the top screen offers?800 x 240 resolution and the bottom a 320 ? 240 display. Since the bigger screen size is such a boon to the 3-D experience, this isn't a deal breaker. But it's worth noting that the images seem ever-so-slightly watered down.

No second analog stick
It's a point of contention for the more hard-core gaming set: they like to have two analog sticks for controlling their games. Many had hoped the 3DS would come with two sticks. It did not. Likewise, the Nintendo 3DS XL also does not have a second stick. It seems a strange redesign omission, especially since Nintendo released a second-stick peripheral -- the Circle Pad Pro -- for the original 3DS.

Big for little hands
I'm a relatively small person and the Nintendo 3DS fits in my hands nicely. However, upon handing the biggie machine to my young son I could see that bigger and heavier (the 3DS XL is 11.1 ounces compared to the original's 8.1 ounces) could be awkward for?some young?gamers. And when it comes to a Nintendo machine there will be many, many young gamers wanting to hold this device.

This isn't necessarily a dis on the 3DS XL. It's just something to consider when choosing between size small and extra large.

No charging?cradle
The original Nintendo 3DS came with a handy charging cradle bundled inside. This has been removed from the 3DS XL's package. It was a nice bonus and will be missed.

The price
Nintendo struggled to find the right price for the 3DS when it launched -- originally slapping a hefty?$250 price tag on it only to find itself forced by slow sales?to slash that price to $170.

The?3DS XL is $30 more expensive than its smaller sibling at $200. With its bigger screens and bigger storage, the price increase is understandable. But it's still something to consider when you're deciding whether to buy the 3DS or the 3DS XL.

On the upside, the 3DS XL is still $50 to $100 cheaper than Sony's?PlayStation Vita handheld gaming gadget, which itself is?facing slow sales likely thanks, in part, to its price tag.

TO?BUY ... OR NOT TO BUY?

If you haven't bought a 3DS then now is definitely the time and, I think, the 3DS XL is the way to go.

For starters, the library of 3-D?games for the 3DS and 3DS XL has reached that critical point at which there are enough good games to justify the purchase -- especially for those who want more than the bite-sized games their smart phones offer.

For example, you've got not one but two?3-D?Mario games -- "Super Mario 3D Land" and "New Super Mario Bros. 2" which launches along side the 3DS XL on Sunday. (Check out the reviews here and?here). There's also "Kid Icarus: Uprising," "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D,"?"Mario Kart 7" and?"Resident Evil: Revelations." And be sure to check out In-Game editor Todd Kenreck's video?review ?of "LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars 3DS" (above).

Meanwhile, though you'll have to pay $30 more for the 3DS XL and you'll have to carry around a slightly bigger and heavier gadget, ?I think the?combined improvements to the device's design are worth the money (if you have that money to spare) and the improved?3-D viewing?experience makes the bigger form factor worth lugging around.?

And as an interesting bonus,?I've noticed in sharing the 3DS XL with my son, that the bigger screens make the gaming experience far more social.

That is, handheld game gadgets tend to offer?solitary play?experiences. But with the 3DS XL's?larger screens, its easier to share the action with a?second or third person sitting next to you. This is especially handy if you share the device with a child?or are getting the device for?a child (as many of you perhaps are). Large?screens mean?they can more easily watch you play and you can more easily watch them play. It's certainly a nicer way for siblings to wait their turn.

Yes, ultimately, bigger really is better.

Weird News: Are Kiwis Highly Susceptible To Dating Scams ...

online dating scame
This woman is not interested in your love, she wants your money.

Two-thirds of cyber-fraud monetary losses in the New Zealand islands centered around online dating.

We all want to believe there's someone out there who could love us. Sure, some of us are utterly unloveable, but the lion's share of us are correct in the assertation that we deserve some person outside of our immediate families to love us. And, the longer we go without that love, one of two things happens: either we give up or we become dangerously desperate.

Desperation is palpable. Even over the webz, creeps and con artists can smell it wafting from a mile away. And, it appears, these charlatans are hitting some of the world's nicest people where it hurts most: the heart. Per Stuff.co.nz, two-thirds of cyber-fraud monetary losses in the New Zealand islands centered around romance and dating.

Given that many places not involved in making Peter Jackson films are still using dial-up, the total sum of these frauds were low: less than a million New Zealand dollars in total (around $800K in US greenbacks). Still, while this grand total is less than what Robert Redford was willing to pay Woody Harrelson for one night in the sack with Demi Moore in the film Indecent Proposal, it's still awful to think that some hard-hearted harlots (or hucksters) have, on around 1,000 separate occasions, bilked some lovelorn Kiwis out of their hard-earned cash.

These frauds include, but are not limited to, schemes such as the Spanish Prisoner and the Sun And Spring. The general approach involves the rogue gaining the confidence of a lonely person and slowly bleeding money while promising, but never delivering love, attention and affection. A more cynical person may call this "an Anna Nicole."

video call, Video phone, video IP phone - Video Conferencing -- it is ...

Video conferencing is a word we all are well aware of. The technology is being used in every field of business, in education, health, and the list goes on. ?Video connects people in real-time, with visual and audio to deliver more effective communications. As they say words have meaning, a picture tells a thousand words, and video does it all.

The concept of using video communication has in fact been around for a very long time. ?Video phones were first introduced in the 1964 World Fair in New York. It was presented as part of a bold new future. The technology however was impractical and expensive. It wasn?t until the last 70?s that advances such as Network Video Protocol and Packet Video Protocol improved quality and practicality. The cost still limited usage to enterprise organisations. By the 1980?s video conferencing entered the commercial market, albeit at still astronomical rates by today?s standards, around $250,000 a unit and $1,000 an hour to use. ?

The 1990?s saw advances in compression technologies, and the arrival of Internet Protocol (IP) set video on the path to what we now recognise as easy to use, ubiquitous video conferencing. In 2001 the ?War on Terror? saw TV reports via satellite video phone in real-time. By 2003 high-speed internet access and decreasing costs of video capture and display technology put video on the path to the mass market, for any business and households. Today Video IP Phones provide a superb user experience over the public internet or Private or Virtual Private Networks. High definition cameras, crisp audio and features such recording of video calls for future playback have dramatically improved accuracy of communications. Video phone handsets are now around cost parity with a lot of regular, non-video phones.

Large format video endpoints now provide video conferencing for any sized meeting room, from small offices to large boardroom multi-screen units, and at costs that any business can afford. ?The decision today is not about whether video is right for a business, but the right way to implement it. Hardware based or on-premise video is one approach, another is a cloud-based format. With the advancement of internet speeds, PC processor speeds, the quality of inbuilt cameras and microphones, and the boom in cloud storage, it is now possible to outsource video to hosted (cloud-based) provider and dramatically reduce the upfront hardware and staff IT costs.

Video has been with us for longer than you would think. Many technological roadblocks have been smashed to deliver video as we know it today. Without a doubt the industry is still evolving.

Screen shot 2012-08-13 at 9.44.31 AMTeleconferencing has changed the way business is conducted. Small companies can hire talent in another city, large corporations can save money by having international meetings in a conference room, and managers can keep tabs on off-site workers through services like Lua. But as technology never rests, neither does the teleconference industry, and Y Combinator-backed Double Robotics proves it. The company has built an incredibly creative iPad stand that works as a robotic body double for you. It's a bit like the Swivl, but built for the enterprise.

Landscape Gardening For All | Online Business Articles

?

By Kevin Woodward

A garden is the focal point of any home and for that reason it is important keep your garden well kept, colorful and inviting. Weather you have a little or a lot of extra cash to spend on transforming your garden the key is to put some basic landscaping principles to work. If your prepared to get your hands dirty, all it takes is a little hard work to turn your lawn into the envy of all your neighbors.

Landscape gardening is all about bringing several different elements together to create a streamlined landscaping look. The look should consist of a variety of different size bushes, shrubs and trees and may also follow a coordinated color scheme if flowers or other blooming trees are involved. To get started, simply visit the garden section of any home improvement store. A sales associate can point beginners in the right direction and provide helpful tips on getting started. Remember, it is easy to start with just a few basic pieces and then add on as time and skill level allows.

Inexperienced gardeners should choose hearty plants that require little upkeep and can withstand a range of climates. These will be the easiest to take care of and keep looking great. Choose one or two trees to create the main focal points of the landscape, then fill in the surrounding areas with smaller bushes and shrubs. A good set of tools is also important for any at home gardener. It is handy to have a set of long shears as well as smaller clippers to tend to different size bushes. A ladder, shovel, rake and a good pair of gardening gloves will also be necessary along the way. Some prefer landscaping trash bags to store yard waste.

Next comes the process of planting and installing the landscaping. A professional can be hired to assist with the project, or it can be done by the homeowner. It is sometimes helpful to put down a layer of plastic under any landscaping rocks or mulch, to help keep weeds from growing through. Make sure to cut holes to give trees and bushes enough room to grow and breathe. It is also important to consider whether an automatic or manual watering system will be used to regularly water the landscaping. Automatic sprinklers are convenient and save time, but manual watering with a hose can be just as effective.

Finally, it is important to regularly maintain the new landscaping for a polished and well-kept look. The smaller clippers are useful here for quick and easy pruning of bushes and clipping of weeds. Use the longer shears to reach any unwieldy branches on larger trees. Keep a proper yard trash can handy to dispose of all clippings, or use them as compost somewhere else. Landscape gardening is a great way to ensure the outside of a home looks great and inviting, and it?s a project that will last for years to come.

Are ETFs Turning Investors Into Day Traders? | ETF Trends

Do exchange traded funds turn long-term investors into speculative day traders, as some critics claim?

Not if they?re Vanguard investors.

According to a new Vanguard research paper, ETFs: For the better or bettor?, most Vanguard shareholders exhibit disciplined ?buy and hold? behavior whether they?re investing in traditional index funds or ETFs. Why is that good news? Because if it were true that ETFs cause investors to trade more, then ETF ownership could result in increased transaction costs and ill-advised market-timing behavior?both of which might reduce an investor?s returns.

Vanguard?s research found that critics? presumptions about ETF trading are typically based on data dominated by large institutional investors at the fund level?not on data at the individual investor level.

Using a unique data set of transactions conducted by individual Vanguard clients, our researchers analyzed more than 3.2 million transactions in more than 500,000 positions held in traditional mutual fund and ETF share classes of four different Vanguard index funds from 2007 through 2011.

?Our individual investor data show that the majority of both traditional mutual fund and ETF investments are held in a prudent, buy-and-hold manner,? said Joel Dickson, one of the study?s authors and a principal in the Vanguard Investment Strategy Group.

?While differences exist between the characteristics of people who buy each investment type, our analysis shows that claims of speculative trading behavior among ETF investors are greatly exaggerated,? he said.

The majority of Vanguard ETF and mutual fund investments exhibit buy-and-hold behavior

It depends on the investor ? and the investment

The study acknowledged that ETF trading behavior is more active than behavior in traditional mutual funds. However, the study showed that much of that difference is because investors who are inclined to trade choose ETFs, not because investors who choose ETFs are encouraged to trade.

For example, the study found that relative to investors in traditional mutual funds, investors who purchase ETFs are more likely to be male, to be over the age of 60, or to check their investment balances at least daily. Not surprisingly, our analysis of trading behavior found that people in these three groups tend to trade more often, regardless of which investment vehicle they choose.

Mr. Dickson and his three co-authors?John Ameriks, Stephen Weber, and David Kwon?demonstrated that about 40% of the trading activity differences between ETFs and funds are explained by such investor and account characteristics.

The study also found that contrary to what critics in the popular media claim, the ETF ?temptation effect??the supposed tendency of investors to trade more after they choose ETFs as an investment vehicle because of the availability of intraday trading?isn?t a likely source of observed high trading volume activity among ETFs.

?The ?temptation effect? is not a significant reason for long-term individual investors to avoid using appropriate ETF investments as part of a diversified investment portfolio,? the authors concluded.

Notes:

  • All investing is subject to risk.
  • Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against a loss in a declining market.
  • You must buy and sell Vanguard ETF Shares through a broker, which may incur commissions. Vanguard ETF Shares are not redeemable directly with the issuing Fund other than in Creation Unit aggregations. Like stocks, ETFs are subject to market volatility. When buying or selling an ETF, you will pay or receive the current market price, which may be more or less than net asset value.
